ESG

Understanding ESG: What It Means for Investors and Businesses

A plain-language guide to environmental, social and governance factors and why they increasingly affect financial decisions.

What ESG actually means

ESG refers to environmental, social and governance factors used to assess how an organisation operates beyond its financial statements. Environmental covers impact and resource use; social covers people, customers and communities; governance covers how the organisation is run and held accountable.

Why it matters now

Investors, lenders, regulators and partners increasingly weigh ESG alongside financial performance. Strong governance and credible environmental and social practices can lower risk and widen access to capital; weak ones can do the opposite.

ESG is strategy, not a report

The mistake we see most often is treating ESG as a document produced once a year. Done well, it is built into how capital is allocated and how the business is run, which is the heart of our ESG advisory work. That substance is also what protects against accusations of greenwashing.

Getting started

Begin with a materiality view: which factors genuinely affect your business and stakeholders. Focus effort there, set measurable goals, and report honestly. A focused, credible position beats a broad, superficial one.
